Today we will venture into one of Bavaria’s most beautiful areas, traveling along the southern end of Germany’s Romantic Road, where the spectacular mountain scenery is guaranteed to take your breath away no matter the weather or season. Our day begings at the 1700th Century Pilgrimage Church of Wies, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by Abbot Marianus II Mayer and architect Dominikus Zimmermann, the church serves as a miraculously preserved masterpiece of the exuberant Bavarian Rococo style. There will be time to enjoy the chapel's many beautiful ornamentations and picturesque grounds, all framed by the serene alpine setting.
From here we travel along the picturesque mountain roads through the 700-year-old town of Füssen and onto one of Bavaria’s most popular sites. Nestled at the foot of the Alps sits the enchanting Neuschwanstein Castle, perhaps the most famous and photographed castle in the world. The palace was commissioned by Mad King Ludwig II of Bavaria as the ultimate cliff-top retreat and in honor of famous composer Richard Wagner. The grand and whimsical architectural elements of the castle will inspire your imagination and a sense of wonder. The magic of this special place is so rich, that Walt Disney’s empire used Neuschwanstein as the inspiration to create the Fairy Tale Castles found at the heart of each park, as well as the Disney logo.
Upon arrival, we will enjoy a guided tour of the castle's ornate interior, where we will learn more about the castle's construction and colorful history. Afterward, there will be plenty of free time to enjoy the castle from the outside and expansive views from one of the highest points in Bavaria. The castle is framed by an idyllic natural setting of majestic mountain peaks and endless vistas of forest and lakes that provide endless opportunities for photographs.
The day offers plenty of free time to explore on your own, shop for souvenirs or enjoy a Bavarian meal. Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of a marked, 3-mile hike around the Alpsee Lake or explore King Ludwig's favorite waters using one of the boats available for rent on site. To make the most of your day, remember to wear or bring comfortable shoes, plan ahead for the weather and bring your camera charged and ready to capture these iconic sites and amazing views!
