Wonderful Würzburg & Wine

Journey with RTT to the most romantic region of Germany, filled with picturesque vineyards and medieval towns lined with half -timbered houses and cobblestone streets, each with their own ancient tales to tell. Today we will combine sightseeing with an epicurean adventure that explores Franconia’s best wines and culinary offerings for an all-inclusive day of delight!

Our time in Würzburg will begin with a visit to the famous “Residence of Würzburg.” Construction began with the foundation stone laid in the early 18th century, the Palace was commissioned to rival the grandness and ebullience of the Palace of Versailles in France and Palace Schönbrunn in Vienna Austria. Master architect Balthasar Neuman masterfully combined the best of traditional German baroque building style with hints of imperial Vienna baroque styles along with the dramatic French flair of time. The interior was considered a masterpiece of Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical architecture, crowned by ceiling frescos painted by the Venetian artist Giovanni Batista, in the Imperial Hall. During a self-guided tour, we will be able to admire firsthand, what was considered to be one of the finest buildings in Europe of its time.

Next, we stroll the charming streets of Würzburg’s old town, where the city beams with artful treasures and colorful history at every turn. We will pass the historic market square, centered around the gothic chapel of St. Mary’s and the Neumünster Cathedral, shelter to the tomb of the famous Minstrel Walter von der Vogelweide. Our final stop will be the medieval Marien-bridge which offers a breathtaking view at the massive Marienberg Fortress. After plenty of free time to explore at your own pace, shop for souvenirs or have a light lunch, we say goodbye to Würzburg and hello to wine country!

Our next stop takes us to the heart of one of Germany’s most beautiful wine regions where we visit a popular traditional wine maker.  It is here that we will learn about the Franconian wine making secrets and the mineral rich soil that gives the wines here their rich taste and unique character.  An in-depth wine tasting paired with a traditional Vesper plate (meat & cheese board) provides the perfect opportunity to sample these delicious wines! After some time to shop for additions to your own Wine collection, it is time to return home.
