Journey with RTT to the most romantic region of Germany, filled with picturesque vineyards, medieval towns lined with half -timbered houses and cobblestone streets, each with their own ancient tales to tell. Today we will combine sightseeing with an epicurean adventure that explores Franconia’s best wines and culinary offerings for an all-inclusive day of delight!
Würzburg, once home to 10,000 US soldiers and their families, will be our first destination along the Romantic Road. At every turn, this city beams with artful treasures, witness to an eventful history. We will visit the historic market square that is centered around the gothic chapel of St. Mary’s and the Cathedral Neumünster that is shelter to the tomb of the famous Minstrel Walter von der Vogelweide. Our final stop will be the medieval bridge at the massive Marienberg Fortress where there is free time to explore and take in the amazing view before we say goodbye to Würzburg and hello to wine country!
Our next stop takes us to the heart of one of Germany’s most beautiful wine regions where we visit a popular traditional wine maker. It is here that we will learn about the Franconian wine growing secrets and the mineral rich soil that gives these wines their rich taste and unique character. An in-depth wine tasting paired with a traditional Vesper plate (meat & cheese board) provides the perfect opportunity to sample these delicious wines!
After a visit to the wine cellars and some time to shop for your private wine collection, we travel even further along the Romantic Road to Rothenburg o.d. Tauber. It is now time to satisfy your sweet tooth and where better to do that as in Rothenburg with a serving of the famous “Schneeballen” (Snowballs). The name is derived from the round ball like shape and the traditional decoration of white confectioner’s sugar. The Ballen (ball) is made from short crust pastry and glazed in different flavors. We invite you to enjoy the unique atmosphere of this historical city, stroll along the cobblestone streets and explore the small stores.
We gather again before dusk for the grand finale of the trip where we join Rothenburg’s famous Night-Watchman. Hear the fascinatingly dark tales of the life in Rothenburg’s middle ages, when thieves, drunks and shade loving ragtag raised havoc and mischief within the city walls. During this immersive adventure, learn all about how this unsung medieval hero protected the townsfolk during his nightly rounds.
