Today we make a journey deep into the picturesque Rhineland Region to discover Satzvey Castle, nestled against the eastern edge of the Schavener Heide Nature Preserve. Originally built in the 12th century, and first documented in 1396, Satzvey Castle is considered to be the most beautiful and finest preserved moated castle in the Rhineland. On arrival, we begin with a guided tour through and around the original castle house, twin-towered gatehouse, and oldest components in the north part of the structure. Following the tour, it is time for independent exploration of the extensive 4.5-hectare castle grounds, which have been carefully designed to transport you back in time for a day of medieval magic.
The Medieval Knights Market offers shopping opportunities for goods and handicrafts created by merchants of various local guilds, as well as festive entertainment from storytellers, minstrels and jugglers. Proud knights, dressed in full regalia, mounted atop their massive warhorses rule the streets when there are not making merry at the knight's camps. The castle also offers some delightful courtyards and restaurants where you might enjoy some homemade delicacies and refreshing drinks. There are also a number of interesting shops where you can sign up for medieval-themed workshops and classes. Satzvey Castle and the experience you will find here is a true monument to architectural preservation, noble culture and medieval way of life, this trip gives you plenty of time to enjoy it all before we return home!
