Overview: Founded by the
Romans, Cologne is the oldest city in Germany and still characterized by its
2000 years of history. With over one million inhabitants, it is the 4th
largest city in Germany. Commerce and industry flourish in this international
trade fair center.
Itinerary: The historic Cologne Cathedral is the focal point of all Cologne celebrations.
The gothic cathedral with its characteristic spires is
the landmark of Cologne. It houses the golden Shrine of the Magi, as
well as numerous other outstanding art treasures. The Cathedral is encircled
by 12 Romanesque
churches, truly excellent examples of medieval church architecture.
Almost all the sights worth seeing can be reached on foot from the Cathedral:
museums of worldwide importance, such as the Museum Ludwig, the Roman-Germanic
Museum and
others.
The Imhof-Stollwerck Museum of Chocolate on the Rhine Harbor Island will
tickle the taste buds and educate about all the aspects of this culinary
delight! Cologne’s 7 Christmas markets in the city, each with a special
flair, grow more and more attractive for visitors from abroad. Christmas
markets by the cathedral, on the Alter Markt, the Neumarkt, and the
Rudolfplatz lend the city its sparkling charm.
Other
markets are found at a ship at riverside, by the Chocolate Museum, the
Cathedral square and the city garden.
On top of it all, Cologne gastronomy is the stuff of legends! Join RTT to
see the Cathedral and experience the shopping, food and beers of this
fascinating European metropolis.
