Castles on the Rhine River
Tour Operator: RTT

Overview:  The Middle Rhine is popularly known as the Romantic Rhine Valley because of the scenic views and the many castles and ruins along the riverbanks. The micro-climate of the Middle Rhine is responsible for wonderful wines and various fruit products produced in the region. This navigable river has long been a focus of international attention and will attract you, too, with its beauty.

Itinerary
:  Our excursion to the Rhine River begins with a tour of one of the famous Rhine River Castles (one of four which will be rotated on a regular basis- see below). After the castle tour (included), we go by bus to the Rhine River where we will board our ship (included). We will enjoy a  cruise of the most scenic part of the Rhine Valley where there will be explanations on historic sites and castles in English. Once we go ashore, our bus will pick us up and take us on a picturesque ride to our restaurant. We will enjoy a typical German lunch (included), followed by a wine tasting of some of the famous "Rheingau" wines (included) and you have the opportunity to purchase some right then.

Afterwards, you have the opportunity to either visit the Medieval Torture Museum, Mechanical Music Cabinet, or take a cable car ride (April to October, in good weather) up to the Niederwald Monument with a great view over the Rhine Valley.

As a finale, visit Rüdesheim, the best known town along the Rhine, to walk through the world-famous “Drosselgass”.

Feature Castles for 2008

Burg Rheinstein: This privately owned castle dates from the middle ages, with many additions and restorations. A self-guided tour leads you through rooms with gothic frescoes, stained glass from the 14th-16th centuries, antique furniture and a neogothic chapel. Snacks and beverages are available from their cafe.

Burg Stolzenfels: This is a typical 13th century castle built to impose illegal “Rhine tolls” with drawbridge, gate-way, keep and chapel. It was rebuilt by the King of Prussia between 1836 and 1842 from plans drawn up by Schinkel, Stüler and Persius. Of the older exhibits, the most interesting is the collection of armor and weapons.

Burg Reichenstein: One of the oldest castles on the Rhine, this 11th century robber knight’s castle has been destroyed and rebuilt at least three times. Perched on a rocky ridge, its mighty wall and defensive towers contributed to the strength of its position on the Rhine. Valuable period furniture and an extensive collection of arms and armor are on display.

Castle Schedule for 2008 is listed under the month in the Departure Dates & Castle Visit Schedule table (below).
